The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
