For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison built from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a moment that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a telescope taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the encounter was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the tunnel was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the case almost certainly contained vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he fights the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
